Heidi Schröck & Söhne Beerenauslese 2024 (37.5cl)
£26.45
The wine
Bright gold, with ripe quince, apple and nectarine on the nose. The residual sugar, a considerable 220 grams per litre, is balanced precisely by fine acidity, and the concentrated, exotic fruit carries through a long, silky finish.
Lake Neusiedl makes this wine possible: every autumn it throws up the mists that bring noble rot to the three south-east facing vineyards Heidi Schröck draws on, planted on sandy loam with quartz and schist. She took over the familyös ten hectares at Rust in 1983 and now works them with her twin sons Johannes and Georg, farming without herbicides or insecticides and encouraging local plants as cover crop. The shrivelled Welschriesling and Weissburgunder berries were hand picked at the end of October, selected rigorously in the vineyard, trodden by foot and left to macerate overnight, then pressed long and gently and fermented in a mix of 225-litre acacia barrels and stainless steel. This is the half bottle.

Heidi Schröck & Söhne
View all Heidi Schröck & Söhne winesHeidi Schröck & Söhne is a distinguished estate in Rust, on the shores of Lake Neusiedl in Austria's Burgenland. One of the region's most respected growers, it makes characterful whites and reds from native grapes. The wines are pure and full of personality.
The vineyards lie on varied soils around the warm, lake-moderated town of Rust, a historic wine centre. Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt lead the reds, with Furmint among the whites. Careful, traditional winemaking lets each site speak.
The range spans the juicy Junge Löwen and Rusterberg reds, the deeper single-vineyard Riede Kulm Blaufränkisch and a rare, mineral Furmint. Each is fresh, characterful and expressive of place. They show Burgenland at its best.
Heidi Schröck's wines combine Austrian freshness with real depth and craft. They are distinctive, food-friendly and beautifully made. A rewarding taste of Burgenland.
