The wine

Intense aromas of fragrant jasmine, honeydew melon, Granny Smith apple and lemon zest, combining with anise and sweet blossom. Silky and textural on the palate, with honeysuckle, citrus peel and juicy stone fruit. Off-dry, with a zesty acidity that drives to a long, elegant finish.

The fruit comes from the organically farmed Ashmore Vineyard at Fairhall, at the mouth of the Brancott Valley, where gravelly clay-loam gives conditions closer to the Southern Valleys than to the Wairau plains. The 27 year old vines are shoot and bunch thinned to keep yields in check. Hand-picked at moderate ripeness to hold the natural acidity, whole-bunch pressed, then fermented half in stainless steel on cultured yeast and half in old barriques on indigenous yeast. Fermentation was deliberately halted to leave some residual sugar, and the blend went back into old barrels for six months on lees.

The producer

Greywacke is the acclaimed Marlborough estate of Kevin Judd, the founding winemaker of Cloudy Bay and one of New Zealand's most respected names. Named for the region's river stones, it crafts benchmark Sauvignon Blanc and beyond. The wines are among Marlborough's very best.

The grapes come from mature vineyards across the Wairau and Southern Valleys, farmed with care and picked at optimal ripeness. Cool nights and stony soils give the wines their vivid fruit and freshness. Judd's decades of experience show in every bottle.

The range runs from the classic, vibrant Sauvignon Blanc to the wild-fermented, barrel-aged Wild Sauvignon, alongside fine Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. Older Archive Release vintages show how beautifully the wines age. Each is pure, textured and expressive.

Greywacke's wines combine Marlborough's signature freshness with real depth and craft. They are elegant, food-friendly and consistently outstanding. A benchmark of New Zealand wine.
