Gran Sasso Alta Quota Pecorino 2025

The wine
Straw yellow with youthful highlights, opening on white fruits such as pear and apricot.
Pecorino is planted almost exclusively in Abruzzo and the Marche, and it came close to disappearing before a revival in the 1980s. The name comes from pecora, sheep, supposedly because flocks grazed on the grapes as they passed. Abruzzo is the most mountainous region in Italy, its vineyards caught between the Apennine snowfields and the Adriatic, and that swing between mountain and sea is what preserves acidity in a hot southern climate.
The producer
Gran Sasso
View all Gran Sasso winesGran Sasso is a well-loved Abruzzo producer named for the highest peak of the Apennines, which towers above its vineyards. It has built a strong reputation for sun-filled, exceptional-value wines from Italy's mountainous east. Native grapes are at the heart of everything it makes.
The vineyards benefit from cooling mountain air and warm Adriatic sun, giving ripe fruit with freshness. Montepulciano, Trebbiano and Pecorino are the local mainstays. Careful winemaking keeps the fruit bright and true.
The range runs from crisp Trebbiano and aromatic Pecorino whites to juicy Montepulciano and the oak-aged Alta Quota from the Colline Teramane hills. Each over-delivers for the price. They are ripe, generous and food-friendly.
Gran Sasso's wines capture the warmth and character of Abruzzo. They are honest, flavourful and superb value. A dependable taste of southern-central Italy.
