Gašper Pinot Grigio 2025
£14.75
The wine
Straw yellow with a subtle shade of pink. Ripe pear and grapefruit on the nose.
The faint pink tint is the variety showing through: Pinot Grigio has pink-grey skins, and even the briefest contact draws a little colour. Slovenia sits on the same ground as Friuli across the border, and the two share their grapes under different names. It has been making wine since Roman times and is only now becoming familiar to British drinkers, which is much of why the wines are still sensibly priced. Gašper Carič works in the Vipava valley in western Slovenia, on steep slopes at 80 to 200 metres, with vines between eleven and thirty-five years old.
The producer
Gašper
View all Gašper winesGašper is a boutique estate in Goriška Brda, the beautiful hill country of western Slovenia on the Italian border. Run by Gašper Čarman, it crafts pure, characterful wines from this cross-cultural corner of the wine world. The estate has quickly won admirers for its finesse.
The vineyards sit on the marl and sandstone soils that Brda shares with neighbouring Friuli, worked with care and a light touch. Cool nights and Alpine-Adriatic air give the wines their freshness and aromatic lift. Native and international grapes both thrive here.
The range is led by fresh, textured whites, from crisp Pinot Grigio and Malvazija to the local Rebula and a Chardonnay blend. A serious, structured Cabernet Franc shows the red side of Brda. Each is pure and beautifully balanced.
Gašper's wines combine freshness, texture and a real sense of place. They are elegant, food-friendly and quietly distinctive. A rewarding taste of Slovenian wine.
