The wine

Pònkler is Franz Haas's flagship single-vineyard Pinot Nero, from a high Alto Adige site. One of Italy's finest Pinots, it is profound, complex and built to age.

Red and black cherry, raspberry, violet, spice and forest floor unfold with depth. The palate is silky yet structured, with concentrated fruit, fine tannins and an exceptionally long finish.

A wine for fine dining and the cellar. Serve at cool room temperature, decanted.

Franz Haas is one of the great names of Alto Adige, the German-speaking Alpine region in Italy's far north. Now led by the eighth generation to bear the founder's name, the estate is celebrated above all for its Pinot Nero. Its wines are among the most refined in the region.

The vineyards climb steep slopes between three hundred and over a thousand metres, on a patchwork of volcanic, limestone and Dolomite soils. This dramatic altitude and cool Alpine air give the wines their vivid fruit and freshness. Franz Haas farms with precision and a deep respect for site.

The range spans crisp Pinot Grigio and Pinot Bianco, aromatic Gewürztraminer, the celebrated Manna white blend and a sweet Moscato Rosa. At its heart are the Pinot Neros, from the estate wine to the profound single-vineyard Pònkler. Each is elegant, pure and distinctly Alpine.
