The wine
Crianza requires two years of ageing with at least twelve months in oak, and it is the tier where Spanish reds first show what time in barrel does for them.
Cigales sits between Ribera del Duero and Rueda on the same high Castilian plateau, and it built its name on rosé when its neighbours were making reds. The old bush vines are its real asset: Tempranillo, called Tinta del País here, planted before anyone thought the region worth developing. Finca Museum work Cigales, on the Duero plateau north of Valladolid, from dry-farmed bush vines many over 70 years old.
The producer
Finca Museum
View all Finca Museum winesFinca Museum is a leading name in Cigales, a small, historic appellation in Castilla y León on the banks of the Duero. Long celebrated for its rosados, Cigales is increasingly known for serious Tempranillo reds. Museum has done much to raise the region's profile.
The vineyards grow on stony, sandy soils under a harsh continental climate, with hot days and cold nights. Old bush vines of Tempranillo yield low quantities of concentrated fruit. Traditional field blends with local grapes remain part of the story.
The range runs from the fresh Cigales rosado and the Vinea Crianza to the flagship Museum Reserva and the characterful La Renacida field blend. Tempranillo leads, aged patiently in oak for depth. Each wine speaks clearly of its terroir.
Elegant, structured and full of character, Museum's wines reward at every level. They offer the depth of the Duero at very fair prices. This is one of the finest expressions of Cigales, a region on the rise.
