Domaine du Coulet Cornas Brise Cailloux 2022
£45.95
The wine
Deep purple, with an expressive nose of eucalyptus, blackcurrant and fresh herbs.
Brise Cailloux means broken stones. Cornas is the smallest and most southerly of the northern Rhône red appellations, entirely Syrah, on granite terraces so steep that everything is worked by hand. The name is said to come from a Celtic word for burnt earth, and the wines are the most powerful of the northern Rhône, traditionally needing a decade before they open. Domaine du Coulet is Matthieu Barret 11.1 hectares in Cornas, farmed biodynamically on steep south and south-east facing terraces.

View all Domaine du Coulet winesIn Cornas, in the Northern Rhône, Domaine du Coulet is the biodynamic estate of Matthieu Barret, a leading light of the appellation. Farming steep granite terraces high above the Rhône, he crafts Syrah of purity, energy, and real individuality. This is Cornas with a modern, natural sensibility.
Barret works biodynamically and with minimal intervention, letting the granite terroir and the Syrah grape speak without distortion. Whole-bunch fermentation and gentle handling give wines of freshness and drive. The style is vivid, mineral, and distinctive.
The range spans deep, structured Cornas cuvées and a bright, characterful Côtes-du-Rhône. Each captures the wild, peppery soul of Northern Rhône Syrah.
To pour a du Coulet wine is to taste Cornas at its most exciting. Pure, energetic, and profound, these are Syrahs for the adventurous drinker.
