Domaine Jean-Pierre Bailly Pouilly-Fumé 2025

The wine
Pouilly-Fumé faces Sancerre across the Loire and is planted largely on silex, the flint that gives the appellation its smoky character and its name: fumé means smoked.
The same grape on the same river a mile apart tastes recognisably different, which is the clearest lesson in soil the Loire offers. Sauvignon Blanc here is leaner and more mineral than the New World style, built on the acidity the cool climate preserves rather than on tropical ripeness.

Domaine Jean-Pierre Bailly
View all Domaine Jean-Pierre Bailly winesIn the village of Pouilly-sur-Loire, Domaine Jean-Pierre Bailly tends Sauvignon Blanc on the flinty slopes above the river. A family estate, it has built a quiet reputation for classic, unshowy Pouilly-Fumé. The focus here is firmly on place.
The vineyards sit on the silex and limestone soils that define the appellation, lending the wines their signature smoky minerality. Farming is careful, and the cellar approach is traditional, aiming to capture Sauvignon at its most transparent and precise.
The style is fresh, mineral, and food-friendly. These are wines that reward the drinker who values purity over power, with the crisp acidity and stony depth that make Pouilly-Fumé so versatile at the table.
To pour a Bailly wine is to taste the Loire in classic form. Bright, flinty, and true to its origins, it is a dependable pleasure and a fine partner for the sea.
