The wine
An enticing nose of concentrated, ripe red berry fruits, enhanced by subtle notes of black pepper and spice. Supple and rounded on the palate, supported by a delicate tannic structure. The everyday wine of an estate whose history runs back to 1264, when the family arrived from Italy to serve the pope at Avignon. Considerable pedigree for the money.

Domaine de la Solitude
View all Domaine de la Solitude winesWine has been made on this estate for several hundred years, back to 1264 when the family arrived from Italy to serve the pope at Avignon. The three hats on the label represent two bishops and a pope among the forefathers of the Lancon family.
The 38-hectare domaine in Châteauneuf-du-Pape is now run by Florent Lancon, who farms sustainably under Terra Vitis certification. He is unusually open to innovation for so old an estate, and has recently begun working with tulip-shaped concrete vats originally designed for Cheval Blanc.
The range runs from a straightforward Cotes du Rhône through the Vallons de la Solitude to the Cuvee Barberini, named for the papal family and made only in the better years.
