The wine
A rich and opulent wine with ripe blackcurrant aromas layered with notes of the garrigue and cistus flowers. Full bodied but with a soft texture and characteristic elegance, the ripe fruits combine with notes of cocoa, cherry and a hint of liquorice on the finish. The estate bottling, from 38 hectares farmed sustainably under Terra Vitis certification. The three hats on the label stand for two bishops and a pope among the Lancon forebears.
The producer
Domaine de la Solitude
View all Domaine de la Solitude winesWine has been made on this estate for several hundred years, back to 1264 when the family arrived from Italy to serve the pope at Avignon. The three hats on the label represent two bishops and a pope among the forefathers of the Lancon family.
The 38-hectare domaine in Châteauneuf-du-Pape is now run by Florent Lancon, who farms sustainably under Terra Vitis certification. He is unusually open to innovation for so old an estate, and has recently begun working with tulip-shaped concrete vats originally designed for Cheval Blanc.
The range runs from a straightforward Cotes du Rhône through the Vallons de la Solitude to the Cuvee Barberini, named for the papal family and made only in the better years.
