Domaine de Colonat Moulin-a-Vent Les Greneriers 2023
£23.25
The wine
The king of the crus, from manganese-rich granite soils beneath the old windmill. Deep and structured, with dark cherry, iris and a savoury mineral core, the tannins firmer and finer than Beaujolais convention allows. Built for the cellar, and a serious rival to good Burgundy at half the outlay.
The producer
Domaine de Colonat
View all Domaine de Colonat winesSince 1828 Domaine de Colonat has passed from father to son; today it is the seventh generation, Thomas Collonge, running the estate with his wife Julie. Thomas took over gradually from his parents from 2008, bringing an eco-friendly approach to the twelve hectares, which span seven Beaujolais appellations, supplemented by long-term contracts with trusted growers. He began converting to organic cultivation in 2017; a third of the estate is now certified, and the whole is sustainably farmed and HVE certified.
The aim is simple: to express the very best of each cru, from granite-soil Beaujolais Villages through Fleurie, Morgon and Moulin-a-Vent. Gamay taken seriously, and priced as though it still were not.
