Dobogó Úrágya Tokaji Furmint 2021
£25.75
The wine
Pale gold, revealing the superb potential of the grape, with a lustrous nose.
Úrágya sits on the western border of Mád and is thought to be of medieval origin, one of the historic named vineyards of Tokaj. Tokaj is best known for Aszú, the botrytised sweet wine that was the first to be classified anywhere in the world, in 1737. Dry Furmint is a much more recent development and has become the region serious second act: high in acidity, taking readily to oak, and unmistakably volcanic in character.
The producer
Dobogó
View all Dobogó winesDobogó is a small, celebrated estate in the Tokaj region of north-eastern Hungary, one of the world's great historic wine areas. Family-run and biodynamic, it crafts both dry Furmint and the legendary sweet Tokaji Aszú. Few names better express the modern renaissance of Tokaj.
Furmint is the noble grape of Tokaj, grown here on volcanic and loess soils in prime vineyards around the town of Tokaj. For the sweet wines, the autumn mists of the Bodrog river summon noble rot, shrivelling the grapes to concentrate their sugars. Meticulous, low-yield farming is the foundation.
In the cellar, the dry Furmints are made taut and mineral, the Aszú wines rich yet balanced by Tokaj's racy acidity. Long ageing builds depth and complexity across the range. Purity and precision define the house.
From a crisp dry Furmint to a profound six-puttonyos Aszú, Dobogó offers Tokaj at its finest. Mineral, characterful and utterly distinctive, these are wines steeped in one of wine's great traditions.
