Dawson James Tasmania Pinot Noir 2018
£57.75
The wine
Bright, supple and complex. Fragrant, spicy cherry fruit with sappiness from whole-bunch inclusion.
Whole-bunch fermentation includes the stems, which adds structure, spice and aromatic lift that destemmed fruit cannot give. Tasmania is the coolest wine region in Australia, closer in growing conditions to Burgundy than to the mainland, and the Derwent Valley south of Hobart is among its coolest corners. Dawson James is Peter Dawson and Tim James, both long-serving Australian winemakers, working the Meadowbank vineyard on the upper Derwent in southern Tasmania, planted in 1989.
The producer
Dawson James
View all Dawson James winesDawson James is a small, highly regarded Tasmanian producer, a partnership between Peter Dawson and Tim James, two of Australia's most experienced winemakers. Together they focus on the cool, maritime south of the island, chasing elegance and finesse. Their wines are made in tiny quantities.
The estate works only with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the grapes best suited to Tasmania's cool climate. Grown on well-drained slopes near the coast, the fruit ripens slowly to preserve acidity and perfume. Meticulous, low-yield farming underpins the wines.
In the cellar, restraint and precision shape wines of purity and depth. The Chardonnay is taut and mineral, the Pinot Noir fragrant and silky, both built in a Burgundian mould. Nothing is overworked.
Dawson James offers Tasmania at its most refined, cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of genuine class. Elegant, mineral and ageworthy, these are among the island's finest wines.
