Château Patache d’Aux Médoc Cru Bourgeois 2018
£21.75
The wine
Médoc Cru Bourgeois from the northern end of the peninsula, where the gravel thins and Merlot takes a larger share of the blend than it does in the famous communes further south.
Cru Bourgeois is a classification for Médoc estates outside the 1855 list, revised regularly rather than fixed, and it is where the region can still be bought sensibly. Château Patache d Aux takes its name from the horse-drawn coach that once served the estate.
The producer
Château Patache d'Aux
View all Château Patache d'Aux winesChâteau Patache d'Aux is a long-established estate in Bégadan, in the northern Médoc, classified Cru Bourgeois. Its curious name recalls the old horse-drawn coach, the patache, that once served the noble d'Aux family. Generations of winemaking stand behind it.
The vineyard is planted to the classic Médoc grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon leading with Merlot and a little Petit Verdot. Gravel and clay soils give the wines structure and depth. Careful farming keeps quality consistent across vintages.
In the cellar, ageing in oak rounds the tannins and adds a cedary polish. The style is firm yet approachable, offering the Médoc's savoury character without a grand price. Reliability is its quiet strength.
Patache d'Aux is a dependable Médoc claret with genuine pedigree. Cassis, cedar and fine tannins make it a natural at the table, drinking well young or after a few years in the cellar.
