Château Macquin Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion 2023 (37.5cl)
£10.75
The wine
Deep ruby red, with intense ripe raspberry and blackcurrant on the nose and spicy notes behind.
Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion is one of the four satellite appellations north of Saint-Émilion proper, on the same limestone plateau and often from the same hands, and it is where the geology of the right bank can still be bought sensibly. Merlot leads the blend, as it does across the right bank, because it ripens earlier and suits the clay. Château Macquin lies three kilometres north of Saint-Émilion, in the village of Saint-Georges. This is the half bottle.

Château Macquin
View all Château Macquin winesChâteau Macquin is a historic estate in Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion, a fine satellite appellation on the hills north of Saint-Émilion itself. The name honours Albert Macquin, a nineteenth-century pioneer who did much to rebuild the region's vineyards after phylloxera. That legacy of care endures.
The vineyards sit on a clay-limestone plateau with excellent drainage, ideal for the Merlot that leads the blend. Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon add lift and backbone. The elevated site gives freshness alongside the Right Bank's generous fruit.
In the cellar, tradition guides the work, with ageing in oak to round the tannins and add spice. The style is plush yet structured, offering much of Saint-Émilion's character at a friendlier price. Balance is the constant aim.
Macquin is a reliably satisfying Right Bank red with real pedigree behind it. Ripe, velvety and food-friendly, it drinks well young yet has the structure to reward a few years in the cellar.
