Château de Pitray Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux 2020
£29.25
The wine
The estate's flagship Castillon, a ripe, Merlot-dominant red from the fine 2020 vintage. Grown on clay-limestone and aged in oak to build depth and structure.
Concentrated aromas of blackcurrant, plum and cocoa lead to a full, polished palate. Firm but ripe tannins, dark fruit and a note of cedar carry a long, warming finish. Ageworthy.
A natural partner for roast lamb, grilled steak or game. Serve at cool room temperature, decanting to open it up.
The producer
Château de Pitray
View all Château de Pitray winesChâteau de Pitray stands on the high plateau of Castillon, the Côtes de Bordeaux appellation that runs east from Saint-Émilion. One of the largest and oldest estates in the district, it has belonged to the same noble family for centuries. Its handsome château presides over a sweep of vineyard with commanding views.
Castillon shares much of Saint-Émilion's clay-limestone terroir, and Pitray makes the most of it. Merlot leads the plantings, with Cabernet Franc and a little Malbec for lift and spice. The elevated, well-drained slopes give wines of freshness alongside ripeness.
The winemaking is classical and measured, with ageing that rounds the tannins while preserving fruit. The style is generous but never heavy, offering the plush character of the Right Bank at a gentler price. Balance is always the aim.
Pitray is a byword for honest, characterful Bordeaux from a rising appellation. Approachable young yet capable of a few years of age, these are wines made for the table and for genuine everyday pleasure.
