The wine

A fresh and charming nose of citrus and pastry, with beautiful length and elegance on the palate: white fruit well balanced with floral notes, brioche and minerality. Grand Cru Chardonnay, at a very fair price for the classification.

Porte Noire began with a shared enthusiasm for wine between David Farber, a Frenchman and oenophile with a background in the trade, and the actor and musician Idris Elba. Between them they produced something rather more considered than the usual celebrity endorsement.

The Champagnes are made in a bone-dry, low-dosage style, with a Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs at the top of the range. Alongside them sits a Provence rose from the Cotes de Provence, made in the pale, dry style the region is known for. Both halves of the range share the same approach: restrained, well made, and a good deal better than the label alone would lead you to expect.
