The wine

Rutherglen Muscat is one of the wine world's great sweet treasures, and Chambers Rosewood is its most legendary name. This is fortified Muscat à Petits Grains, sun-dried and barrel-aged in the north-east Victorian heat.

Deep amber in the glass, it pours with luscious flavours of raisin, toffee, orange peel and spice, rich and unctuous yet lifted by a gentle freshness, finishing long and warming. Pure liquid gold.

Serve in small measures, lightly chilled, with rich puddings, blue cheese, or simply on its own. Supplied in a 37.5cl bottle.

The producer

In the warm, dry country of Rutherglen, in north-east Victoria, the Chambers family has made fortified wine for more than 150 years. Chambers Rosewood is a national treasure, its cellars home to some of the oldest and most precious barrels of Muscat and Topaque anywhere in the world. Few wineries can claim such an unbroken thread of history.

Rutherglen Muscat is Australia's unique gift to the world of sweet wine, made from sun-shrivelled grapes that are fortified and then aged, sometimes for decades, in an unbroken solera. Time and patience do the rest, building extraordinary depth and complexity.

Unctuous, layered and utterly singular, these are among the greatest sweet wines on earth. A little goes a very long way, and rewards slow, thoughtful sipping.

Serve in small measures, lightly chilled, with rich desserts or blue cheese, and taste a living piece of Australian history.
