Casa Ferreirinha Papa Figos Douro Tinto 2024
£11.95
The wine
Ruby red with violet nuances, bursting with juicy strawberries, blackberries and cherries.
Papa figos means fig muncher, the local nickname for the golden oriole that passes through the Douro each year. The Douro is the largest mountain vineyard on earth, terraced into schist so hard the roots drive metres down to find water, and it was the first demarcated wine region in the world, in 1756. Casa Ferreirinha is the Douro table wine house of the Ferreira family, and the wines are made from the same schist terraces that produce port, using the same indigenous varieties.

Casa Ferreirinha
View all Casa Ferreirinha winesCasa Ferreirinha is the most storied name in the Douro, the house that gave Portugal its greatest red wine. It takes its name from Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, the Ferreirinha, the legendary nineteenth-century matriarch who built a Douro empire and became a national heroine. Her spirit still runs through everything the house makes.
From the everyday Esteva to the mythical Barca-Velha, Casa Ferreirinha has set the standard for Douro table wine for generations. It works the region's steep schist terraces and native grapes with a blend of deep tradition and quiet modernity.
Authentic, age-worthy and spanning every price point, these are wines of real pedigree and soul. Few houses offer such a complete portrait of a great wine region.
Serve the reds at cool room temperature and the whites well chilled, and taste the heart of the Douro.
