Capezzana Ugo Contini Bonacossi 2019
£56.75
The wine
Intense ruby red with elegant red cherries and hints of spice. Refined on the palate.
Named for Ugo Contini Bonacossi, the wine comes from the Viticciana vineyard he designed himself. Carmignano sits west of Florence and is one of the oldest delimited wine areas anywhere: Cosimo III de Medici granted it protected status in 1716. Uniquely in Tuscany, the rules have permitted Cabernet in the blend for centuries, long before the Super Tuscans made the idea fashionable. Tenuta di Capezzana at Carmignano has been making wine since at least 804, when a parchment records a lease of vines on the estate, and it has been in the Contini Bonacossi family since 1920.

Capezzana
View all Capezzana winesOn the hills of Carmignano, west of Florence, Capezzana is one of Italy's oldest and most storied wine estates, with a documented winemaking history stretching back over a thousand years. For generations it has been the home of the Contini Bonacossi family, custodians of one of Tuscany's most distinctive traditions. Few estates carry their history so lightly, or so well.
Here, uniquely, Sangiovese has long been partnered with Cabernet, a marriage the Medici first encouraged centuries ago. The result is Carmignano, a red of elegance and structure all its own, alongside a Bordeaux-inspired super-Tuscan and a characterful, textural Trebbiano.
Historic, graceful and beautifully made, these are wines of real depth and pedigree. They reward patience in the cellar and generosity at the table in equal measure.
Decant the reds and serve at cool room temperature, and taste a thousand years of Tuscan history in every glass.
