Cantine Belisario Cambrugiano Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva 2022
£22.75
The wine
Pale gold, opening on complex vanilla, honey and fresh floral notes. Full and rounded.
Cambrugiano is the Riserva, which requires longer ageing. Verdicchio is one of very few Italian whites capable of a decade in bottle, and its almond-bitter finish is the variety signature. Matelica lies in a narrow valley inland from the better-known Castelli di Jesi, and it is the only valley in the Marche running north to south rather than east to west, so it gets no sea breeze at all. The climate is continental, with hot days and cold nights, and the Verdicchio comes out firmer and more mineral than the coastal version.

Cantine Belisario
View all Cantine Belisario winesHigh in the cool inland valleys of the Marche, Cantine Belisario is the guardian of Verdicchio di Matelica, one of central Italy's most distinguished white wines. Grown far from the sea in a natural amphitheatre of hills, these Verdicchios have a mineral tension and freshness all their own.
From fresh everyday whites to the age-worthy Cambrugiano Riserva, the range shows the grape's remarkable breadth. Alongside them sit characterful Marche reds, from perfumed Lacrima to structured Rosso Conero, each true to its origin.
Precise, mineral and beautifully made, these are among Italy's great white-wine bargains. Matelica is a hidden corner of the wine world, and Belisario is its most eloquent voice.
Serve the whites well chilled and the reds cool, and discover one of Italy's most rewarding and overlooked regions.
