Bodegas Lan Rioja Gran Reserva 2018
£22.95
The wine
The Gran Reserva is sourced from forty-year-old Tempranillo in Rioja Alta, with Mazuelo from the Viña Lanciano vineyard adding depth. Aged for two years in French and American oak and a further three years in bottle, it is released only when fully ready to drink.
Mature and savoury, it offers dried red fruit, leather, tobacco and a wash of vanilla and clove, carried by soft, resolved tannins to a long, graceful finish. A classic partner for game, roast beef and aged cheeses.
The producer
Bodegas Lan
View all Bodegas Lan winesFounded in 1972, Bodegas Lan takes its name from the three historic provinces of Rioja, Logroño, Álava and Navarra, and has become a benchmark of the region. Its heart is Viña Lanciano, one of Rioja Alta's largest and most beautiful single vineyards, cradled within a sweeping bend of the River Ebro.
The vineyard's poor, stony canto rodado soils and old vines, some up to sixty years of age, yield small quantities of deeply concentrated fruit. Farmed sustainably and divided into twenty-four plots by soil and aspect, each parcel is matched to the grape that suits it best: Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha or Mazuelo. Its jewel is Pago el Rincón, the highest and oldest plot, source of the celebrated A Mano and Culmen.
Since 2002, winemaker María Barúa has guided the estate with a master's feel for oak, drawing on French, American, Pyrenean and Hungarian barrels and the hybrid barrel Lan pioneered in Rioja. The result is a complete range, from bright, welcoming Crianza to the profound Gran Reserva, alongside a vibrant Verdejo made with Olga Tormo in nearby Rueda.
