Fine and elegant, with citrus and honeydew melon lifted by subtle toffee and toasted almond; textured on the palate, the refreshing citrus and tropical flavours underlined by a smoky, flint character through a delicious saline finish. Blackbook is an urban winery in a railway arch in Battersea, south London, where Sergio Verrillo and Lynsey Verrillo make some of England's most compelling still wines. The philosophy is simple: tradition blended with innovation.

Grapes come from carefully chosen growers within a couple of hours of the city, and Blackbook's job is to bring that vineyard work to the forefront through a range of single-vineyard bottlings. The focus is Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, handled minimally, with low to zero sulphur and natural yeasts. The results reflect the vibrancy, culture and energy of London itself, and make a compelling case that England can produce world-class still wine, not merely sparkling.
