The wine
Karmrahyut means red village. Areni is Armenia's great red grape, thin-skinned and high in acidity, giving a wine closer in weight to Pinot Noir than to anything Mediterranean, with red cherry, dried herbs and a distinctly savoury, spiced finish.
Armenia has the oldest known winery in the world: a cave at Areni, excavated in 2007, containing a wine press, fermentation vats and grape seeds dated to around 4100 BC. ArmAs farm at over 1,400 metres on the slopes of Mount Aragats, which is among the highest commercial viticulture anywhere.
The producer
ArmAs
View all ArmAs winesArmenia has a fair claim to being the birthplace of wine. The Bible describes its slopes planted with vines, and the world's oldest known winery, some 6,100 years old, was unearthed in an Armenian cave. ArmAs, founded by Armen Aslanyan, is revitalising that extraordinary legacy for the modern day.
The estate sits on the 45th parallel in the Aragatsotn Province, 180 hectares of undulating vineyard and orchard on complex volcanic soils, set against the snow-capped backdrop of Mount Ararat. It is one of the most dramatic places on earth to grow a vine.
Winemaker Emilio del Medico works exclusively with estate-grown native varieties: the golden-hued Voskehat for whites and the deeply coloured Karmrahyut for rosé and reds, grapes found almost nowhere else on the planet.
The results are elegant, distinctive wines that taste of their ancient homeland: mineral, aromatic and quietly profound. For the drinker who thinks they have tried everything, Armenia awaits.
