Saint Damien was an early Christian martyr, put to death in 287 AD and regarded as the patron saint of doctors. A chapel was raised in his honour at La Baumette, the tiny hamlet just outside Gigondas where Joel Saurel lives, and in 1979 the name was adopted for the domaine.
Four generations have worked this family estate since 1821, and Romain Saurel joined his father in 2013. The domaine has been certified organic since 2012.The wines are old-vine Grenache of the traditional southern Rhône sort: generous, garrigue-scented and built to age, from Plan de Dieu up to the Gigondas cuvees.
