Bishop's Leap is a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc made by Megan Simmons, and it has been a reliable favourite for many years.
The name refers to a piece of local history. Marlborough's early European settlement produced a number of odd place names, and the label belongs to the tradition of second labels made by established producers: fruit from good vineyards, made carefully, sold without the premium a famous name commands.
Marlborough's character comes down to thiols, sulphur-containing aromatic compounds responsible for the passion fruit and grapefruit notes, which the region's cool nights and intense daylight produce in unusual concentration. Fermented cool in stainless steel with no oak, this is the style at its most direct.
