Basilisco farms at Barile on Monte Vulture in Basilicata, one of the poorest and least visited regions in Italy and the source of one of its greatest reds.
Vulture is an extinct volcano, and Aglianico grown on its black volcanic soils at 450 to 600 metres produces a wine of formidable structure. The grape ripens very late, often into November, and gives high acidity and firm tannin that demand years in bottle; Aglianico del Vulture is frequently ranked alongside Barolo and Brunello as one of Italy's three great age-worthy reds.
Barile is known for its cellars dug into the volcanic tuff, natural caves that hold constant temperature and humidity year-round. The estate is now part of the Feudi di San Gregorio group, and farming is organic.
