Andrea di Pec is a Friuli label working the region's most widely planted white grape.
Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the far north-east against the Slovenian border, is generally held to make Italy's finest white wines, and its history explains the range: the land passed between Venice, the Habsburgs, Italy and Yugoslavia, and its vineyards carry varieties from all of them. The region was also the laboratory for modern Italian white winemaking in the 1960s and 70s, when producers there pioneered cool fermentation and reductive handling that the rest of the country subsequently adopted.
Pinot Grigio is a pink-skinned mutation of Pinot Noir, and Friuli is where the best Italian examples come from, with more texture and grip than the Veneto plains produce.
