Amata is a Prosecco label from the Veneto, made under the Prosecco DOC that covers a wide area of the Veneto and Friuli plains.
Prosecco has an unusual history for a famous wine. Until 2009 Prosecco was the name of the grape, which meant anyone anywhere could plant it and use the name. The Italian authorities solved that by renaming the grape Glera and turning Prosecco into a protected place name, extending the appellation across nine provinces in the process, including the village of Prosecco near Trieste to justify it.
The method is Charmat, with the second fermentation in a pressurised tank rather than the bottle, which is deliberate: it preserves Glera's fresh pear and white-flower character where long lees ageing would bury it under bread and brioche. Amata means beloved.
